The Artists in Residence programs for visual artists in the International Guest Studio Maltator, the Old Town Gallery, the Folding Wood Studio and the Gallery Studio Maltator Parterre play a special role in the artists’ town of Gmünd. At the invitation of the Künstler:innenstadt Gmünd gem. Privatstiftung (formerly Kulturinitiative Gmünd), over 180 artists from all over the world have taken the opportunity to spend two months working and exhibiting in the heart of the historic old town since 1993. The stay in the artists’ town of Gmünd offers the guest artists the unique opportunity to get to know Austrian art and culture far away from urban centers and yet to live in a culturally highly interested and active environment, to make contact with the local artists and those exhibiting in the artists’ town and to get involved in the diverse cultural life.
The exciting different approaches of our international artists to their creative work bring great diversity and constant innovation to Gmünd and make the small medieval town cosmopolitan. Many guest artists have become good friends of the town, are always happy to visit, keep in touch and follow with interest the sustainable development of the small town into a city of artists.
