WELCOME TO MY UNKNOWN BY ERIK KESSELS
PHOTOGRAPHY AWARD FOR EMERGING CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS

MIA Photo Fair proudly unveils a new call for artists specifically designed for the fair by Erik Kessels – a Dutch artist, curator, and expert in visual communication with a profound passion for art and photography. This award aims to engage emerging contemporary artists under 35, working with photography as an artistic language.

Up to 15 participating artists will have the opportunity to exhibit their work for free in a dedicated showcase during the 13th edition of MIA Photo Fair, scheduled from April 11 to 14, 2024 – with VIP Preview by invitation on April 10 – at MiCo Allianz, via Gattamelata 13, Milan.

CONCEPT

“We live in times where lens-based technology is fully developed and in image making anything is possible. With the rise of artificial intelligence many images may become statistical hallucinations. The ‘how’ becomes less important, the ‘why’ takes center stage. Exactly this is why new ideas and the creation of original narratives in photography become essential. Unknown territories are ready to be explored and celebrated.”

COLLATERAL AWARDS

Additionally, participating winning artists will have the opportunity to be selected for two collateral awards promoted by our Partners:
– Gente di Fotografia. The selected artist will have their portfolio published in the magazine ‘Gente di Fotografia’, coinciding with the 13th edition of MIA Photo Fair. The artist will be chosen by Franco Carlisi, editor of ‘Gente di Fotografia’, from the artists selected by Erik Kessels.
– Litostudio Milan. The selected artist The selected artist will have the opportunity to participate, free of charge, in a residency period at Litostudio, a Milan-based social promotion association with the goal of physical enjoyment of art. Jacopo Costa Buranelli will choose the artist who will be hosted in the studio for the residency, and the period of the permanence can be arranged with Lito’s members.
