OBSCURA Mag is an online photography magazine that has at its core the mission to be a platform to sustain and grow the medium. Founded in 2021, our platform is dedicated to the dissemination of exceptional photographic content, comprehensive journalistic coverage, and insightful criticism. We pride ourselves on showcasing the work of outstanding visual artists, providing a stage for artistic excellence and innovation.
We are happy to announce our first OPEN CALL for photography projects, the selected artists will receive a publication in the first print edition of OBSCURA Magazine along with their projects.
Theme
As a rising contemporary media, OBSCURA Mag wishes to provoke its audience and send them on a connotative adventure into their own reality. The theme of the first edition is “Where I’ve never been.” We encourage call participants to skillfully navigate and leverage controversy as a strategic advantage. This approach should inform and enhance their final selections and layout, turning potential challenges into opportunities for creative and impactful storytelling. We hope that participants will embrace the theme not in a literal sense, but as a catalyst for an explosion of creative approaches in photography. This perspective should inspire innovative and diverse interpretations, pushing the boundaries of conventional photographic expression.
We encourage artists to capture the unreachable and unruly reality and wish them a peaceful journey through the cloud of reflection.
Projects can cover any genre, as long as it goes through the theme of the call.

The photographic projects will be judged based on a set of criteria that focus on the qualitative value of the work, its expressiveness, and its relevance to current themes and trends. This approach ensures a holistic evaluation, recognizing not just the technical excellence but also the emotional impact and contemporary significance of each project.
In the final round, four exceptional participants will be chosen to receive the prestigious opportunity of having their work published in the first print edition of the magazine. Additionally, they will each be awarded a complimentary copy of this landmark issue, celebrating their creative contributions and the magazine’s inaugural print release.
Winners will be announced on the OBSCURA Mag website as well as on social media.

Technical Requirements
We ask for proper compliance with the technical requirements for submission of applications. For the convenience and efficiency of both parties, we kindly request adherence to the following instructions regarding file submissions:
- Folder with 5-15 photos, ≤2 MB each, emailed to contact@obscuramag.com. You can also link to Google Drive.
- Description to the photographs (max. 3000 characters) sent as a Word or PDF file.
- Name the files as follows: name_LastName_NumberOfPhoto.
*Open Call does NOT require payment of a fee. Each artist can participate with only 1 project.
