Open Call: One-month residency in Gyumri AiR

Open Call: One-month residency in Gyumri AiR

Yerevan based independent artistic and curatorial platform art basis invites artists and inter-disciplinary practitioners to apply for a fully funded, one-month residency in Gyumri, Armenia.

Gyumri AIR is a community art space and residency project that is located in newly constructed apartment buildings in Mush-2 district in Gyumri which houses people who have been living in temporary constructions after the 1988 earthquake. The project is realized in cooperation with Hayastan All Armenian Fund that has made possible the construction of art residencies together with the residential buildings for 36 families who have lived in extremely precarious conditions for more than 30 years.

We invite artists to work with the context and the surrounding area of the district and develop projects that will speak to the reality around the residency through various approaches and strategies involving the local community. Artists are invited to engage with different methods with the space or through collaborations with local residents and think about community driven projects that can have continuation after the residency period.

We are interested in exploring how it is possible to imagine artists’ involvement in this social environment, what type of art can be meaningful in such social and economic environments and for the people living there, what can art offer in this space and how can artists work with the neighborhood, how can it participate in the fabric of the city that has gone and will still be going through various transformations, be it political, economic, social or ecological. Artists can use the space to work with the community, to engage in collective practices, experiences, initiatives and projects, for their art production and research and other activities in collaboration with the neighborhood.
