The Farm Margaret River Funded Residency

The residency is focused on site-specific projects, created during an eight-week period through research and collaboration while living at The Farm. The Farm offers space and time for artists, as individuals or a group, to consider our place in the natural environment, surrounded by the ancient beauty of South West Western Australia. Any work that arises from the residency or from collaborations should reflect your time spent at The Farm. You will be supported to share your work with the local community. There are a number of specific outcomes for the residency, itemised below.

  • Artists must write an article, essay or other contribution reflecting on the artist’s experience and their work created at the residency. This writing may be published online.
  • Artists must deliver an experience at the property through which the local community can engage with the artist and the residency such as a workshop, talk, open studio, exhibition or tour.
  • Artists must create site-specific artwork on the property based generally on the proposal set out in the artist’s entry application for the residency and the artist’s previous works.
  • The artist consents to, and agrees to cooperate with TFMR in, professional documentation of the artist’s participation in the residency and their artwork by film, photography and audio recording, at TFMR’s expense.
  • The artist is encouraged, but not obliged, to donate to TFMR part or all of any site-specific artwork that is not permanently or temporarily fixed to the property.

In addition to accommodation in our self-contained artists studios, the successful artist or group will receive a grant of $7,500 (ex. GST) to cover out-of-pocket expenses.

  • The grant covers all fees, costs and expenses incurred by the artist in undertaking the residency including all materials and equipment required during the residency, all other travel and accommodation costs, insurance premiums, food, freight and other out of pocket expenses.
  • TFMR will arrange, book and pay for travel expenses to the property from the artist’s place of residence if required, and host the artist on the property in self-sustained studio accommodation.
  • The artist understands that no other fees or payments will be owed to them.

Artists from all disciplines, as either individuals or groups.

  • Applicants must be at least 18-years-old.
  • Applicants must have a good level of written and spoken English.
  • Applicants must be emerging or professional practising artists and be recognised as such by their peers.
  • It is strongly advised that applicants hold their own Australian or international drivers licence, as alternative transport options in the region are limited.
  • We encourage applications from people who identify as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, as queer and/or trans and as having a disability, as well as people of colour, people of all genders and from all cultural and linguistic backgrounds. We also encourage applications from artists of all professional levels, from emerging and early career to established.

IMAGE, AUDIO, TEXT AND/OR VIDEO SUBMISSION

Applications may be ineligible if image, audio and/or video references are not submitted in the correct format. Image, audio, text and/or video references should reflect the direction of your work – preferably within the last 5 years. Older work may be submitted if you can demonstrate why it is relevant to your application.

Applications open March 1 and close 5:00pm (AWST) Sunday June 2, 2024  with the eight-week residency to be undertaken between February and October 2025. Timing of the residency is to be determined between the Funded Residency recipient and The Farm.
