WIP Arts and Technology Festival

The WIP Arts and Technology Festival 2024 (WIP24) invites artists, scientists and technologists from all over the world to showcase art & technology synergies and projects. WIP24 will have run under the title de______cloud, and will take place in the CYENS Centre of Excellence and various venues in the old town of Nicosia.

We invite you to submit unique and innovative artworks, projects, performances, talks and workshops that are created in and expand on the intersection of art & technology. The festival will feature a variety of projects, mediums and formats in a diverse exhibition and events program.

Applications will be processed by a committee, which will make the final selection based on the conceptual and technical characteristics outlined in this document, and their alignment with the WIP24 festival thematic. The application deadline is  at 16:00 EET, June 10th, 2024.

All applicants will be notified about the status of their submission via email in the second week of July. The successful applicants will be further briefed about their participation at that time. Please note that physical artworks/components of projects which will be sent via post must be delivered by October 11th, 2024.

WHAT

  • Artworks, performances and projects that are finalized or in a stage/format that can be presented effectively in a festival exhibition context. Works that have been presented in other exhibitions and festivals are also accepted.
  • Talks and Workshops on subjects that are relevant to WIP24’s thematic.

  • Media Artworks (priority given to artworks that utilize/employ/critically approach emerging and developing technologies like VR, AR, XR, AI, etc,, not excluding bio art)

ALLOWANCE

Will be agreed and covered upon discussion with the successful individuals/teams (based on the policy for guests of CYENS CoE) to cover the following (max 1-day prior to event and 1-day after the event.)

  • Travel expenses
  • Accommodation
  • Subsistence
  • Shipping and Equipment transportation for physical components of projects/ Artwork Insurance

*Please note that the maximum amount that can be covered in the allowance will be agreed upon with the artist and is subject to a predetermined limit under CYENS CoE policies.

RULES & REGULATIONS

  • The WIP Arts and Technology Festival 2024 (WIP24) call is open to all individuals and teams of artists, designers, creatives, academics, scientists etc. (from here forth mentioned as Creatives) who are 18 years or above on 31 May 2024.
  • All applicants must complete the application form in English.
  • Projects/applications submitted by any WIP Festival-affiliated institution are not eligible for funding.
  • Students submitting projects created under a WIP Festival-affiliated university/institutional program should clearly communicate their institutional affiliation. The university/institution should be clearly acknowledged in the project description or credits.
  • Projects that are affiliated with a for-profit company are not eligible for funding. This includes projects created in collaboration with or sponsored by for-profit entities.
  • Regarding installation projects, creatives must also provide photos of the work, 3D renderings, or three sketches.
  • The maximum physical space available for artworks/project presentations cannot exceed 2.5m height × 5m width. We have limited capacity to host tech-driven installation projects which must not exceed the size of a room measuring 4m × 6m × 3m. Applications that propose installations/performances in outdoor spaces will be reviewed but have a very low percentage of acceptance due to limited access to outdoor/public spaces.
  • Material, technique, style, and medium for works are open, but all works must conform to safe display and health safety. Artists should be mindful that the festival is open to all age groups and their works will be displayed in fully accessible venues.
  • Communication between the organizers and applicants/successful creatives will be conducted via email. Applicants will be notified by email whether their work has been selected or not by the second week of July 2024.
  • The final deadline for delivery of projects that will be presented is 11.10.23. Projects delivered after the deadline may not be presented.
  • All projects will be installed from 13.10-17.10.
  • Participating creatives presenting their artworks/projects may also take part in parallel events or assist the festival as volunteers.
  • The creatives of successful proposals of artworks/projects to be displayed, will be requested to provide a detailed tech riders within a week from the acceptance date (tech rider document template will be sent together with the acceptance email).
  • Technology-driven Installation, video artworks, and large-scale works intended for open spaces, must be installed by the creatives themselves, on a date arranged with the WIP curators. Performance artists/teams should coordinate with the WIP curators regarding the arrangement of performance dates, venue and other logistics.
  • CYENS will not be responsible for any damage or loss during transport of artworks, and during their exhibition period. Therefore, we strongly advise the participating creatives to ensure their works adequately against all possible risks during transportation and display.
  • Creatives may cancel their participation in the exhibition until the second week of August, and prior to the first installment. participants should be aware that failure to cancel their participation by the specified date will be considered as confirmation of their engagement with CYENS CoE and the WIP Festival for the exhibition.
  • The committee reserves the right to reject works that do not meet the standards or criteria set for the festival’s exhibition and events program.
  • CYENS CoE reserves the right to use photos, videos and any other documentation and promotional material that will be produced during the production and the realization of the WIP24 Festival which include dedicated and general photos of the projects, artworks, installations, performances, presentations, talks and workshops hosted in the exhibition and events program of the festival on public and social media, for marketing, promotional and educational purposes. Visitors are allowed to take photos of the festival’s venues and all displayed/presented artworks and projects. The organizers are not responsible for any misuse of photos taken by the visitors during the festival’s durations.
  • Participating creatives residing in Cyprus are responsible for uninstalling and packing their works on the designated date agreed upon with the festival curator. All works must be removed from the exhibition venues by Wednesday 30.11. Failure to do so may result in additional fees or penalties. Any works that remain in the exhibition venue after Wednesday 30.11 will be considered abandoned and may be disposed of by the organization.
  • By submitting the application form, applicants agree to the terms and conditions set by WIP Arts and Technology Festival 2024 and CYENS CoE.
