Are you an artist or designer working on social-political concerns and do you need more time for your practice-based research? Are you looking for a nurturing research environment with critical but caring peers and tutors? Do you want to improve your writing, theoretical framework and artistic methodologies? Are you searching for the right formats and contexts to share your artistic research experiments and doubts? Are you planning to apply for a practice-based PhD in the arts? Are you able to dedicate yourself to an intense and intensive artistic research process?
The Advanced Master of Research in Art and Design program focuses on the research development of artists and designers whose practice is addressing a social-political context (including, but not limited to, feminism, social design, migration, decolonization, race, gender, queer, class, disability politics, capitalism, the Anthropocene, the (under)commons, community art, critical design, healing & rituals, history, AI & digital cultures…). The program is developed in accordance with the specific research proposals, interests and needs of the participants. We offer intense coaching in writing, critical theory, artistic research methodologies and in sharing research. The coaching is individual, collective and participatory.
Scholarships
KdG offers a fee waiver for one artist or designer with refugee status in Belgium per intake. If you meet these criteria, please provide proof of your refugee status in Belgium and request this waiver during your application.

Submission Requirements
- Short description of your practice
A brief statement on your art or design practice. Maximum 500 words. - Artistic research proposal
A description of the subject, research question, methodology and objective of your research proposal. Your research should be artistic and practise-based. Maximum 1000 words. - Motivation letter
Why would you like to join this research MA programme? Give an indication of your needs and expectations. Maximum 500 words. - CV & Portfolio
Provide a relevant CV & portfolio or indicate the web address of your relevant digital portfolio. Don’t send your complete portfolio: select in terms of relevance to your research proposal. - Recommendation letter

How to Apply
Online Application
Entry Fee
We require a non-refundable application fee payable during your online application.
- Cost: 136,50 euro (excluding bank costs). This fee is deducted from your tuition fee if you are accepted onto the programme.
Tuition fee
Our tuition fee for a full-year programme (60 credits) in the 2025-2026 academic year for an advanced master’s is 3032,70 euros:
- 992,70 euro – fixed
- 34 euro – variable (per credit)
It is not possible to pay the tuition fee in instalments.
