AURORA BOREALIS is the title of a proposal that intends to add, thanks to the imaginative and transformative power of art and beauty, an imaginary Boreal to Aurora, the youngest and most “real” neighborhood of Turin, starting from the assumption that art is not an “exclusive” language, but rather an accessible and inclusive one, through which individuals and communities can not only feel represented, but become protagonists of paths to transform the habitat they belong to, becoming active advocates of change and appropriation of the contexts in which they live.
The project includes three macro-actions:
- the creation of Borealis , the new cultural and social centre of the Aurora neighbourhood, characterised by a programme of activities and events defined thanks to a co-programming process with the stakeholders and inhabitants of the area: BOREALIS ASSEMBLY
- the creation of public art works, created through participatory paths led by artists in residence, which respond to the desires and needs of the community and which will be donated to the community, finding a place in public or private spaces spread throughout the neighborhood.
- a new residency program for artists hosted in viadellafucina16 condominium-museum , called to transform themselves from authors to community activators and to lead training and participatory creation paths
aurora borealis CALL 4 ARTISTS
Aurora Borealis represents a unique international artist residency format in which the relationship between artist and community is central in all phases of the process:
- in the commissioning and selection of artistic projects
- in the design and creation of works of art
- in the final use and restitution
Artists’ mission.
Artists are called to transform themselves from authors into community activators and to propose collective creation paths aimed at specific groups of beneficiaries (young residents of the neighborhood, young artists, students, women’s groups, young migrants, young people with disabilities, etc.)
Expected outcomes.
Such paths must be aimed at the creation of public works of art (made using any medium or discipline) dedicated and donated to the neighborhood, including public or private spaces as long as they are accessible (for example: open-air spaces, gardens, markets, clubs, shops, associations, museums, shared living spaces, etc.).
Community involvement
In leading the workshops, each artist will be supported by a cultural mediator or an educator, depending on the community of participants involved.
Participants in these courses will not only live an experience of non-formal education but will become co-authors and co-creators of a work that will remain in the public space of their neighborhood. The artists involved will have the opportunity to live an equally formative experience in unconventional contexts, with benefits also in terms of visibility and career.
THEMES.
Through their projects, artists are invited to stimulate communities in proposing new models capable of generating: inclusion and integration, active citizenship, youth protagonism, gender equality, environmental sustainability, a critical and conscious use of new technologies and social media that generates empathy and inclusion.
Participation and selection procedures
The call is open to artists active in any discipline who have a previous exhibition path and previous experience in the field of participatory artistic practices. During the application phase, you are asked to document your artistic path and to present a draft of the project you intend to realize.
The scientific committee – composed of illustrious exponents of the world of contemporary arts and social innovation – will select a list of finalist projects, of high artistic quality and social impact, to be submitted to the Assemblea Boreale : a committee to which citizens, associations, institutions and businesses of the territory can spontaneously join.
Through this process, a total of six projects will be selected to access the residency program.
