Short Description:
The Barcelona Picasso Museum Foundation, in accordance with Article 5 of its statutes, is
responsible for the direction, organisation and management of the Barcelona Picasso
Museum (hereinafter referred to as “the Museum”), including the stewardship of its assets
and resources. The Museum is a leading centre for the study of the formative period and
early career of Pablo Picasso. It also houses, by the express wish of the artist, his only
complete series of works: Las Meninas. The museum opened to the public in 1963, thanks
to an initial donation to the city by Jaume Sabartés. This was followed by a subsequent
donation from Picasso himself, highlighting the artist’s special connection with Barcelona.
The Museum holds a collection of approximately 5,200 works, not including documentary
units. It is the world’s first museum dedicated to Picasso’s early career, boasting a wellequipped documentation centre that gives it significant international reach. Through the loan
of works and the co-production of major exhibitions on the artist, the Museum forms part of
the international network of leading museums. It is also one of the Barcelona’s most iconic
museums, strengthening the city’s status as a cultural capital. Thanks to both the high
number of visitors it draws in (1,130,000 in 2024) and its ability to attract leading global
experts on the work of Picasso, the Museum stands out as a leading cultural centre in
Barcelona.
