The British Film Institute (BFI) is the UK’s lead organization for film and the moving image, operating as a cultural charity and National Lottery funding distributor. Established to support the UK film industry and preserve film heritage, BFI provides funding, training, and networking opportunities for filmmakers while promoting public engagement with cinema. BFI NETWORK Short Film funding

BFI NETWORK England Short Film Funding supports early career filmmakers to develop and produce original, entirely fictional short films up to 15 minutes long. Projects may be in live action, animation, or immersive/virtual reality formats. The fund is designed to stimulate innovative storytelling and provide filmmakers with resources to bring their ideas to life, fostering experimentation and collaboration among early-career teams.

Eligibility

  • Early career filmmakers (producers, writers, directors)
  • Projects must feature a reasonable proportion of early-career cast and crew
  • Teams require at least two individuals covering director and producer roles (Directors/producers cannot apply alone)
  • Producers must be lead applicants
  • Directors attached must be based in England
