While clay serves as the foundation of its programming, the organization structures its residencies as open-ended and place-based initiatives. These opportunities are available to artists and scholars capable of working independently and engaging in multi- or interdisciplinary thinking. The program supports ceramic, literary, visual, and performance artists, alongside farmers, chefs, activists, scholars, and researchers from both the Adirondack region and international backgrounds. Through these residencies, the institution aims to cultivate an environment that enhances individual artistic practice while activating collective creativity within the community.
Residencies of two weeks or longer receive institutional support, with artists-in-residence eligible to apply for substantial sliding-scale scholarships to subsidize their stay. Additional financial assistance is available through fellowships and work exchange programs. Teaching Fellowships extend across all disciplines, reflecting the institution’s commitment to fostering artist-community interaction alongside providing dedicated creative development time.

Program Benefits & Awards
Sliding scale scholarships are available based on individual need. We trust applicants to tell us what they need — applicants choose to apply for one of three funding options:
Supporting – [$1850 Per Week Fee, no Scholarship] This is the actual cost of a residency week. Choosing this rate means that you are making scholarship funds available for others.
Sustaining – [$1000 Per Week Fee after $850 weekly Scholarship] Choosing this scholarship means that you need some financial support in order to attend, but not the full scholarship – which leaves some scholarship funds available for others.
Supported – [$500 Per Week Fee after $1350 weekly Scholarship] This is our maximum scholarship available for artists who genuinely need substantial financial assistance to attend.
Scholarships are competitive and limited, and larger scholarships are highly competitive. You may not apply for more than one option, so be sure to apply to the scholarship option that meets your actual financial need. Thanks to the generosity of our grantors and donors, Craigardan awards more than $130,000 in scholarships annually.
Entry Fee
The application fee is $25.
The full residency fee is $1850 per week. Applicants may choose to apply for a scholarship based on need, or pay the full fee and make scholarship funds available to others.
