The Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met). The American Wing represents one of the largest and most comprehensive holdings of North American artistic expression in the world, with a collection of some 20,000 works ranging primarily from the mid-17th to early-20th century, with select contemporary expressions.
Title & Description:
Applications are open for the full-time, on-site role of Curator of Native American Art.
The curator will conceive, plan, and realize meaningful exhibitions, installations, and programs. The role involves managing the growth of The Met’s diverse collections of Indigenous North American art, thoughtful and thorough engagement with NAGPRA, and cultivating robust collaborations and descendant-community partnerships. The curator will also research, catalogue, and publish the collection of Native arts in print and on the Museum website.

Eligibility:
- Education Requirement: MA in History of Art, Visual Studies, Cultural Anthropology, or Cultural History is required; ABD or PhD is preferred.
- Experience: 10 years of relevant work with historical Native North American collections in a museum or academic setting is preferred.
- Geography: At the time of employment, employees MUST be located within commuting distance of the Museum (defined as residing in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, or Pennsylvania) and be able to commute to and from the Museum in a single day.
- Skills: Deep understanding of NAGPRA guidelines, provenance research, and a strong commitment to collaborating and promoting meaningful exchange of ideas with Indigenous community members.

- Salary: $120,000 – $165,000 annually.
