Title & Description
Early Career Writers of Poetry 2026 – 12-Day International Poetry Residency (Banff Centre)
This 12-day residency is designed for early-career poets at different stages of development, including unpublished writers, emerging voices with limited publications, and poets who have published a first book. The program provides a structured yet highly flexible environment where participants can focus on their writing practice while engaging selectively with mentorship, workshops, and public literary events.
The residency emphasizes self-directed artistic development. Participants are encouraged to define their own goals and project direction while benefiting from optional programming that includes one-on-one mentorship sessions, faculty-led thematic talks, group discussions, and public readings.
The core objective of the program is to help writers deepen their creative practice, refine their poetic voice, and strengthen their critical understanding of literature—both their own work and the work of others. Through direct engagement with established poets and peers, participants are supported in developing both technical skill and conceptual depth.
The residency is structured to balance solitude and community. Each participant is provided with private accommodation and a dedicated studio space, enabling focused writing while still allowing access to a collaborative artistic environment. The program culminates in public literary presentations and informal showcases, offering participants opportunities to share work in progress with an audience.
Mentorship is delivered by leading contemporary poets including Tyler Mills, Vik Shirley, Joyelle McSweeney, and guest writer rob mclennan, ensuring a diverse range of critical and creative perspectives.
