Head of Collections – EMMA – Espoo Museum of Modern Art (Espoo, Finland)
EMMA is recruiting a Head of Collections to lead its collections team and shape the museum’s long‑term collection vision. This permanent, full‑time job offers strategic leadership in developing sustainable, accessible, and forward‑looking collection practices, including stewardship of art in public spaces. The role combines curatorial leadership, policy development, and collaborative work with key stakeholders in the Finnish and international art sector.

The Role Overview

  • Position: Head of Collections
  • Salary: Approx. €5 450 per month (according to EMMA’s salary system), plus benefits (lunch, sports, cultural benefits)
  • Contract Type: Job — Permanent, full‑time
  • Reporting To: Executive leadership and steering group of EMMA
  • Work Location: Espoo, Finland (WeeGee Exhibition Centre)

Position & Tasks

  • Lead and develop EMMA’s collections management team.
  • Develop and implement the museum’s collection policy and processes in support of the long‑term vision.
  • Oversee acquisition processes and priorities aligned with EMMA’s mission and strategic goals.
  • Curate and manage collection‑related projects and collaborations.
  • Supervise and enhance collection care, public presentations, and documentation.
  • Ensure stewardship of artwork in public spaces around Espoo.
  • Maintain active professional networks and partnerships with the City of Espoo and other cultural institutions.

Eligibility

  • A higher education degree relevant to museum and collection work.
  • Demonstrated experience with museum collections, including leadership and policy development.
  • Strong familiarity with modern and contemporary art and design — including Finnish and Nordic art.
  • Proven leadership and communication skills.
  • Project management and financial literacy.
  • Excellent command of English; Finnish skills are an asset.
  • Experience with public art initiatives is a plus. (International applicants are welcome; the role involves collaboration with local and global partners.)
