The Department of Art and Art History at the University of Rochester offers this residency through the School of Arts & Sciences. The department is integrated with the Sage Art Center, a hub for studio practice, research, and community engagement in Rochester, New York.
Title & Description:
Applications are open for the Fanny Knapp Allen Artist in Residence position for a one- or two-year term starting July 1, 2026.
The university seeks an artist or artist collective whose practice centers on fiber-based and textile processes, including both traditional and experimental modes. The resident is expected to conduct research, develop a new body of work, and teach studio art courses (up to three per year). The residency also involves mentoring senior studio majors and delivering at least one public presentation, exhibition, or installation annually that engages the Rochester community.

Eligibility:
- Who: Individual artists or artist collectives. Candidates may be recent MFA or PhD graduates or established artists.
- Requirements: Demonstrated ability to collaborate across disciplinary fields and a strong connection between material production and conceptual inquiry.
Program Benefits & Awards:
- Salary: A substantial stipend/salary between $70,000 and $130,000 USD (commensurate with experience). Note: In the case of a collective, this salary is shared among members.
