Organizer Information:

Fire Island Artist Residency (FIAR) is the first residency in the United States exclusively for artists identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, non-binary, intersex, two-spirit, or queer. It is located in the secluded beach community of Cherry Grove, NY, an historic LGBTQ settlement on Fire Island.

This internationally recognized program brings emerging artists together to share a live/work space. The residency is marked by intimate studio visits and public lectures by renowned leaders in contemporary art, scholarship, activism, and curation.

Eligibility:

  • Who: Emerging LGBTQIA+ visual artists demonstrating new perspectives in contemporary art. (FIAR defines "emerging" as having completed less than two of the following: a solo show in a major art hub, a solo museum exhibition, or having work in a major institutional collection).
  • Scope: International artists may apply (a working knowledge of English is required, and artists must secure their own visitor's visa). Students are also eligible to apply.
  • Collaborators: Collaborative duos are welcome (must apply using a single application and be prepared to share a bedroom).
  • Constraints: No visitors, family members, or pets are allowed on the premises. Absences during the session are only permitted in emergencies or with prior approval.

Program Benefits & Awards:

  • Workspace & Accommodation: Shared live/work space in rented beach house properties modestly converted for artists. Note: FIAR does not provide specialized equipment (like kilns or metal shops) but does offer outdoor space for ventilation and basic hand tools. Artists should bring specific, easily transportable equipment they need.
  • Financial Support: FIAR provides stipends for meals and travel.
  • Honorarium: An honorarium is awarded to participating artists.

$40 USD. (Note: FIAR cannot provide fee waivers or financial assistance for the application fee, as these funds directly pay the third-party portal to administer the process).
