The Fukuoka Asian Art Museum (FAAM), located in Fukuoka, Japan, is the only museum in the world specifically dedicated to contemporary Asian art. Since its founding in 1999, FAAM has served as a critical gateway for cultural exchange, preserving and showcasing the evolution of artistic traditions across Asia. Fukuoka Asian Art Museum (FAAM) Artist in Residence 2026

The Fukuoka Asian Art Museum Residency program invites local and international artists to Fukuoka to engage in a period of intense creative production and community exchange. The 2026 cycle aims to support artists in reaching their full potential by providing a professional environment to develop new work while fostering a deeper public understanding of Asian contemporary Culture. Participants will be based at the Artist Cafe Fukuoka, where they will work in high-quality studios to reinterpret local narratives and landscapes. The program emphasizes "Artistic Exchange," requiring artists to bridge the gap between their professional practice and the local community through public-facing events.

Eligibility

FAAM seeks motivated individuals who meet the following criteria:

  • International: Open to artists of all nationalities and places of residence.

  • Experience: Applicants must have notable experience in the contemporary Art field and show potential for international career growth.

  • Commitment: Must be able to work on-site approximately 5 days a week.

  • Language: Basic proficiency in Japanese or English is required for daily communication.

  • Support: Applicants must provide a letter of recommendation from an art professional or institution.

Program Benefits & Awards

Selected artists receive a comprehensive Grant and support package:

  • Artist Fee & Stipend: A daily Stipend for Living Costs (2,400 JPY/day).

  • Production Budget: Up to 500,000 JPY for Art materials, Research, and installation costs.

  • Travel Costs: Full coverage of round-trip economy airfare or train tickets to Fukuoka.

  • Accommodation: Fully provided short-stay apartment in Fukuoka City.

  • Facilities: Access to a private studio (30–130 m²) and professional mentorship.

  • Collaborations: Opportunities to work with local universities (Kyushu University and Kyushu Sangyo University) and utilize specialized equipment.

Application Requirements

  • Application Forms: Completed Forms 1–3 (CV, Project Plan, and Workshop Plan).

  • Portfolio: Up to 10 digital images of works created in the last 5 years.

  • Recommendation Letter: One letter from an art professional or organization.

  • Portrait: A digital headshot for publicity use.

  • Note: Total file size must not exceed 20MB.

Additional Details

Invited artists are expected to participate in mandatory Art exchange programs, including two Workshops and two Artist Talks. In principle, artists are not allowed to bring family members or travel outside of Fukuoka during their residency term.
