Organizer Information
Founded in 1983 as Toronto Community-Videotex, InterAccess is a gallery, educational facility, production studio, festival, and registered charity dedicated to new media and emerging practices in art and technology. The Centre for Contemporary Canadian Art places the founding of InterAccess as a key moment in both the history of Canadian electronic art and within a broader timeline of developments in international art, science, technology, and culture.
InterAccess's mission is to expand the cultural significance of art and technology by fostering and supporting the full cycle of art and artistic practice through education, production, and exhibition. Annually, the organization executes multiple exhibitions, a full curriculum of skill-building and critical theory workshops, and a broad range of discursive events that explore the impact of technology on the social, political, and cultural aspects of contemporary life.
InterAccess's programs support electronic art from conception and construction to exhibition and discussion, encouraging audiences to see their relationships with interactive artworks anew. The organization collaborates with local and international partners that allow it to exchange ideas, cultivate new perspectives, and further expand media art practice. Its current programming includes the annual IA Current exhibition, the Media Arts Prize, the IA Gateway and IA 360 Residency programs, and the Vector Festival — a game and new media art festival dedicated to showcasing creative media practices, acquired by InterAccess in December 2015. InterAccess has also recently received a UNESCO Creative City of Media Arts designation.
