The Goethe-Fellowship at Documenta Archiv offers an opportunity for young international academics, artists, and curators to engage in interdisciplinary research on the documenta exhibition, focusing on historical, art historical, and international aspects. The program encourages critical perspectives on Western European and North American art canons, supporting innovative approaches to archival research and art production.

 

Information & Application Details: • Funding Period: May 15, 2025 – November 15, 2025 (6 months). • Funding Amount: €2,000 monthly stipend. • Support Services: Visa assistance, housing support, and guidance on German bureaucracy. Application Timeline: • Portal Opens: January 15, 2025. • Application Deadline: February 27, 2025, at 3 PM (CET). • Jury Decision Announcement: Mid-March 2025. • Application fee: Free

 

Eligibility: • Open to young international researchers, artists, and curators. • Applicants must not be based in Germany or other German-speaking countries. • Residency in Kassel is required during the fellowship period. • Proficiency in German (ideally C1 level).

 

Theme: The fellowship focuses on exploring the documenta exhibition’s art historical, interdisciplinary, and international dimensions, with an emphasis on Western art canons and alternative perspectives.

 

How to Apply: Applications must be submitted via the Goethe-Institut’s application portal (link available from January 15). • Language: German preferred (English accepted in exceptional cases).

 

Submission Requirements: • Digital submission through the portal. • Required documents:  Short biography and project summary in the portal.  Single PDF containing: 1. 1-page abstract of the research project, including a timeline and proposal for presenting results (max. 3,600 characters). 2. 2-page CV (including proof of language proficiency). 3. 2 reference letters (max. 1 page each).

 

Selection Process: • Applications will be evaluated based on:  Knowledge of modern and contemporary art.  Archival research experience.  Scholarly, artistic, or curatorial achievements. • Results announced in March 2025.
