Organizer Information:

HANGAR is an Art Research Centre located in the historic Graça neighborhood of Lisbon. Run by artists and curators, it is an independent space dedicated to experimentation, research, and cross-disciplinary practices in the visual arts. HANGAR is part of the Triangle Network and aims to catalyze communication between artists, researchers, and other artistic initiatives, strengthening exchange between Portugal, Europe, Africa, and South America.

Title & Description:

Applications are open for the HANGAR International Residency Program 

This program gives artists, writers, and musicians the opportunity to live and work in Lisbon for a period of one to three months (longer stays available upon request). The residency is non-prescriptive and process-based, encouraging dialogue, exchange, and experimentation.

Visiting artists are invited to develop projects in response to their new environment or conduct research utilizing Lisbon’s resources. The program has a special focus on cross-cultural connections, particularly artistic exploration of postcolonial or diasporic experiences, history, memory, and the current global situation.

Residents are encouraged to cross borders between writing, visual arts, performance, photography, music, and video.

Program Costs:

This is a paid residency.

  • Fees: Range from €650 to €1,820 (depending on duration and accommodation type).

  • Note: Artists are expected to cover these costs. HANGAR can provide support letters for funding applications once accepted.
