Curatorial Scholarship
The HBK Braunschweig is an internationally oriented, arts-based university with the right to award doctorates and postdoctoral qualifications. With approximately 1,000 students in the fields of Fine Arts, Art Education, Performing Arts, Design, Visual Communication, Art History, and Media Studies, the HBK is one of the largest art universities in Germany. Under the title “Braunschweig Projects,” the HBK Braunschweig annually awards seven artistic and one curatorial scholarships on behalf of the state of Lower Saxony.
Starting April 1, 2026, the HBK Braunschweig will award a curatorial scholarship for a period of one year.
The aims of the curatorial scholarship are
- Enriching curatorial practice at the HBK through the development and implementation of a curatorial concept for the final exhibition of the Braunschweig Projects artistic fellows. The fellow will therefore participate in the jury meeting for the selection of Braunschweig Projects artistic fellows and will work closely with the successful applicants throughout the program.
- The development of a curatorial project related to a museum, collection, academic institution, or cultural institution in the region or in Lower Saxony. In addition to research, preparation, and implementation, costing, communication, and, if appropriate, an educational and accompanying program should also be considered.
The scholarship offers considerable scope for individual ideas and creativity. The scholarship holder can draw on the university’s attractive network. Close collaboration and a connection to the work of faculty and especially students at the HBK is desired. At the end of the scholarship, a short final report should be submitted outlining the activities undertaken.
The prerequisite for funding is that the applicant has already gained some curatorial experience (at least 3 years).
Funding is provided through the award of monthly scholarships of €1,500 for a period of 12 months. A residential studio in Braunschweig, designed for one person, will be provided rent-free for the duration of the residency, with reimbursement of monthly rental costs of €200. Within this period, a residency at the HBK Braunschweig of at least eight months during the lecture period in the summer and winter semesters is mandatory. A project grant of up to €4,000 will be provided to support exhibition activities. A budget of €2,000 is available for travel. Funding begins April 1, 2026. Arrival at the residency can begin April 15, 2026.
Participation in the Welcome Weeks , which take place from April 20th to 30th, 2026, is mandatory.
A scholarship cannot be awarded if the applicant receives regular benefits from third parties (e.g. residency or work grants, salary payments) or state funding during the funding period.
