The Hortus Arboretum & Botanical Garden was established by two practicing artists turned gardeners. This residency program was formed specifically to provide opportunities for artists whose work focuses on and is inspired by the natural world.

Title & Description:

Applications are open for the Spring Residency for Visual Artists 2026.

This focused, one-week residency provides artists with a quiet living space and unlimited access to the botanical gardens. It is designed for creators exploring themes of nature and the human connection to the natural environment. The 2026 applications will be juried by Laurie Shapiro, the 2025 Fall Artist Resident.

Eligibility:

  • Who: Visual artists of all backgrounds.
  • Experience Level: Open to both established and emerging artists.
  • Requirements: A car is necessary due to the rural location of the residency.

Program Benefits & Awards:

  • Workspace & Inspiration: Unlimited access to the Hortus Arboretum & Botanical Garden for the duration of the residency.
  • Accommodation: A one-week stay at "The Barnette," a small, modern cottage situated on the perimeter of the gardens, surrounded by woods and overlooking NY state-protected wetlands. The house features a greenhouse with solar panels, a wood stove, one large bedroom, a modern bathroom, air conditioning, an outside deck, a fully stocked kitchen, and high-speed internet. (Note: Smoking is not permitted on the property).

Application Fee & Program Costs:

  • Application Fee: Free to apply.
  • Residency Costs: The accommodation and garden access are provided free of charge. However, Hortus does not offer a stipend at this time. Artists are entirely responsible for their own travel expenses, meals (residents cook for themselves), and art materials.

Application Requirements:

To apply, artists must prepare and submit:

  1. Up to 8 images of their work (you may include a website link, but the juror will make their selection based primarily on the submitted slides and cover letter).
  2. An artist statement.
  3. A cover letter explaining why and how this residency would help further your art practice at this point in your career.
