Short Description

This new project, made in collaboration with Siwon Art and Insa Art Center aims to create a dynamic space for dialogue about identity, where artists can challenge, question, and reinterpret notions of selfhood and belonging. It will foster an exchange between cultures, offering insight into how artists from different backgrounds approach the themes of personal and collective identity, ultimately leading to a greater understanding of the ever-changing landscape of global art.

The overarching theme will explore IDENTITY through a variety of lenses:

Cultural Identity and Globalization: Artists will reflect on how their cultural heritage has adapted in the face of globalization, addressing the tension between maintaining traditions and embracing modern changes.
Personal vs. Social Identity: Artists will examine the often conflicting forces between individual autonomy and societal norms, focusing on how personal identity can be both shaped and constrained by external pressures.
Cross-Cultural Exploration: A key part of the exhibition will explore the convergence of European and Korean cultures, offering a dialogue between traditions, values, and artistic practices in the context of an interconnected world.
The IDENTITY project will consist of two distinct but interconnected sections, each exploring the multifaceted nature of identity in our increasingly globalized world. The exhibition will emphasize the fluidity of identity, examining how cultures, traditions, and individual experiences intersect and evolve in the face of globalization.

MASTERS

This section will feature renowned, established artists, including those with official participation in the prestigious Venice Biennale. These masters of contemporary art will bring their rich perspectives on IDENTITY, offering a lens through which to explore the evolution of cultural identity within the global context. Their works will focus on:

  • Cultural Evolution and Identity Crisis: How globalization has affected their personal sense of cultural identity, and the dynamic interplay between tradition and modernity.
  • Personal and Social Identity: Examining the tension between individual freedom and societal constraints, with works that delve into how these forces shape our sense of self and the way we navigate the world.
  • Cross-Cultural Dialogue: A discussion on the interaction between European and Korean cultural identities, contrasting traditional values with modern reinterpretations in an ever-globalizing world.

These artists, with their established recognition, will provide a strong foundation for understanding the complexity and depth of IDENTITY. Their participation will elevate the discourse, fostering reflection on how identity is not only a personal experience but a collective phenomenon shaped by societal, cultural, and global influences.

NEXT GENERATION ARTISTS

This section will showcase up-and-coming artists who, while not yet internationally famous, have demonstrated significant promise and professional engagement in the art world. The challenge here will be to redefine the notion of “emerging” so as not to imply a lack of professionalism. Instead, we will focus on the term Next-Generation Artists to emphasize their cutting-edge approaches and fresh perspectives on identity. These artists will:

  • Explore Identity in Flux: Delving into the fluidity of identity in the context of globalization and modern life. Their works will highlight the personal transformations and adaptations they face as they navigate the intersection of cultural heritage and contemporary influences.
  • Address the Impact of Globalization on Social Identity: Focusing on how social pressures in both European and Korean contexts shape individual identity, their work will bring attention to the nuances of social identity and how it is influenced by collective expectations, often clashing with personal experiences.
  • Identity as Transformation: Many of these artists will investigate how identity shifts through personal or societal change, using media that combine traditional techniques with innovative, mixed-media approaches to reflect the transformative power of art in shaping identity.
