Junior Registrar – The Scottish Gallery

The Scottish Gallery seeks a Junior Registrar for a 24-month full-time contract. This hands-on role provides practical experience across registration, exhibitions, and gallery operations. The Junior Registrar will work closely with the Senior Registrar and Directors, assisting with the care, management, and presentation of artworks, while also contributing to front-of-house duties. This role is ideal for early-career candidates seeking to develop skills in a commercial gallery environment focused on modern and contemporary art.

The Role Overview

  • Position: Junior Registrar
  • Contract Type: Fixed-term, 24 months, full-time
  • Salary / Fee: £27,500 per annum
  • Reporting To: Senior Registrar and Directors
  • Programme: Full gallery operations, including exhibitions, publications, events, and front-of-house engagement
  • Hours: Core hours 9:30 am – 6:00 pm, five days/week + one Saturday/month (time off in lieu)

Position & Tasks

Core Responsibilities:
  • Register artworks on the FileMaker Pro database
  • Upload artworks to the gallery website (WordPress)
  • Provide front-of-house service to visitors and clients
  • Assist with exhibition installation, packing, and display
  • Prepare invoices and manage sales via Square POS system
  • Support blog/news content creation
  • Assist with mailings, online orders, photography, and maintenance of artworks
  • Handle lifting, moving, and storage of artworks
Person Specification:
  • Essential:
    • Strong IT skills, database and website proficiency
    • Confident client-facing communication
    • Degree in History of Art or similar
    • Highly organised and detail-oriented
    • Self-motivated, able to manage competing priorities
  • Desirable:
    • Gallery or art-related experience
    • Knowledge of social media and communications
    • Event management experience
    • Interest in modern and contemporary art
    • Understanding of copyright and data protection
    • Driving licence
