The Curator and Board Member dual appointment is hosted by the Kulturelle Veranstaltung des Bundes in Berlin GmbH (KBB), the central institutional pillar for several of Germany’s most significant cultural platforms. Established in 2002, KBB operates as a foundation of public utility, uniting four world-renowned houses under one umbrella: the Internationale Filmfestspiele Berlin (Berlinale), the Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW), the Berliner Festspiele, and the Gropius Bau. Under the leadership of the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media, KBB fosters a unique environment for international cultural exchange, providing venues for artistic debate and addressing the central aesthetic and social questions of our time. This high-profile, dual-institutional Job offers an exceptional opportunity for a seasoned professional to shape the cultural landscape of Berlin. The position is a split mandate: serving as a Curator at the Gropius Bau (70%) and as a Board Member for the Exhibitions resort at the Stiftung Brandenburger Tor (30%). The goal is to drive the programmatic exchange and synergy between these two renowned institutions. The selected candidate will conceptualize and implement experimental and genre-crossing exhibitions that bridge classical art presentation with contemporary cultural dialogue, fostering a sustainable interaction between the houses and the public.

The Role Overview

  • Position: Curator & Executive Board Member.
  • Salary: Remuneration according to TVöD Bund (E13), including collective wage increases.
  • Contract Type: Full-time, Fixed-term (Initial term of 5 years, until March 31, 2031).
  • Reporting to: Leadership of Gropius Bau and the Board of Stiftung Brandenburger Tor.
  • Start Date: April 1, 2026.

Position & Tasks

The selected candidate will balance creative curatorial leadership with strategic institutional governance. Responsibilities include:

  • Curatorial Leadership (Gropius Bau): Leading the planning and implementation of international exhibition projects, with a focus on experimental formats and interdisciplinary Research.
  • Strategic Governance (Stiftung Brandenburger Tor): Serving as a Board Member to oversee the foundation's exhibition department and initiate cultural debates at the Max Liebermann Haus.
  • Financial Oversight: Managing project budgets, procurement of services, and contract management in accordance with federal regulations.
  • Public Outreach: Designing educational programs and scholarly outreach that promote aesthetic literacy and democratic values.
  • Networking: Representing both houses in international networks, art fairs, and within the Berlin cultural scene.
