KODA is a Brooklyn-founded nomadic social practice nonprofit arts organization. It functions as a laboratory for creative concepts, focusing on conceptual mid-career artists ingrained in social justice and dedicated collaborations with socially engaged partners.

Applications are open for the Fall 2026 Social Practice Residency.
Placed under the theme of Utopia, this residency supports two artists in developing their conceptual and socially engaged work. The program provides studio space on Governors Island, tailored professional development, and dedicated curatorial consultancy to support the artistic and professional growth of the selected residents.

Eligibility:
- Who: Female-identifying and/or non-binary mid-career artists.
- Age & Experience: Artists must be 30 years old or older. Mid-career is defined here as having a minimum of 10 years of experience as a professional artist, a significant body of work spanning several years, and a minimum of two solo exhibitions. (Artists are often without current gallery representation).
- Constraints: Students currently enrolled in school are not eligible. Collectives and collaborative groups are not accepted at this time.
- Degree Requirements: None. A BA, MA, BFA, or MFA is not required.
Program Benefits & Awards:
- Financial Support: An honorarium of $1,000, plus an additional $250 honorarium for public engagement opportunities, and a $200 professional development credit.
- Workspace & Exhibition: Dedicated studio space on Governors Island, NY, and the option to hold a residency exhibition.
- Professional Development: Studio visits with art world professionals (curators, art historians), monthly curatorial and production consultancy with the KODA team, networking opportunities, and access to Materials for the Arts.
Application Fee & Program Costs:
- Application Fee: Free to apply.
- Exclusions: KODA does not provide housing, transportation, or visa sponsorship.
Resident Expectations:
- Devote a minimum of 20 hours per month to the residency.
- Participate in open studios at least once during the residency term.
- Attend monthly residency meetings.
Application Requirements:
Applicants must submit a proposal outlining their conceptual and socially engaged work in response to the theme of Utopia.
