Short Description

Kyrkerud is beautifully situated by Lake Västra Silen on the outskirts of the small community of Årjäng. Here you live in close proximity to the forests of Värmland and at the northern mouth of the vast lake system that forms the Dalsland Canal. Despite the noticeable presence of wilderness, both Oslo and Karlstad are within close proximity.

Kyrkerud Folk High School is one of five folk high schools that are part of Region Värmland’s organisation. At Kyrkerud, teaching has been conducted for more than 100 years, of which the last 55 years have focused on art and creativity. The school also has a branch in Säffle, but it is at the school in Årjäng that the residence is held.

During your stay, you will have a unique opportunity to develop your artistry in a calm and undemanding environment while at the same time gaining insight into a pedagogical activity where you can learn lessons for a future role as perhaps a teacher or project manager in artistic activities. You will have your own studio and access to our spacious premises and well-equipped workshops.

 

Eligibility

The offer applies to newly graduated artist/craftsman: You must have a degree in the Academy of Fine Arts; Bachelor’s or master’s degree that you have taken sometime between 2019-2025. We only accept applications from those who live in the Nordic region.

We want continuous documentation and visibility through, for example, photography, digital media, open lectures and workshops for the public. We also encourage collaborations with local artists and craftsmen.

  • A text about your artistry and how you would like to spend your residency time at Kyrkerud. We offer time, place, premises and teaching opportunities – what we expect from you is an idea of what you want to fill the time with. Write a maximum of one A4 about your stay and a maximum of one A4 about your artistry.
  • A draft of about half an A4 about what courses you can imagine having during your two teaching weeks.
  • 5-10 images of representative works in an attached PDF file. If possible, also link to your website/instagram or similar.

 

How to Apply

Program Benefits & Awards:

  • Fee: per month is SEK 20,000 (on F-tax). The fee includes participation in events and talks and exhibitions as agreed, as well as two guest teacher weeks at Kyrkerud (the lessons are formed in consultation with the school’s pedagogical staff).
  • Accommodations: We have our own residence for the residence in a small separate house on the school grounds. The house has beautiful lake views in close proximity to nature and is located about 3 kilometers from the center of Årjäng. The total living area of the residence house is approximately 60 square meters. This includes bedroom, study or studio, kitchen, toilet with shower and laundry room. Storage facilities are also available.
  • Food: During the weekdays, breakfast, lunch and dinner are included in the school’s canteen.
  • Studio: There is a studio or study in the home of about 10 square meters. There is also the possibility of a studio space adjacent to the workshops.
  • Workshops: There are well-equipped workshops, mainly for the subjects of graphics, ceramics, sculpture, painting and textiles. There is also a glass workshop for slumping, fusing and casting. The school also has a small wood workshop, as well as good opportunities for work in photography. There is also the opportunity for basic courses in workshops and materials if desired.
  • Travel: Travel expenses to and from Årjäng, as well as other travel within Värmland and participation in the school’s study trips; Maximum SEK 5,000.
  • Material: Production costs and materials; Maximum SEK 20,000.
  • Invoicing and insurance
  • Billing: You must have F-tax, and you invoice all costs and fees. An agreement is written between you as an artist and Kyrkerud’s folk high school, Region Värmland. Any benefit taxation for board and lodging may apply.
  • Insurance: As an artist, you are responsible for your own necessary insurances both for personal injury and for objects and art. Home insurance and artist insurance apply.
  • Approval: As an applicant, you agree to share photos and documentation of your work during the stay for communication and documentation of the project. You also need to approve a rental agreement for the period of residence.

 

Selection & Notification:

Notification of admission or rejection is made by e-mail. Rejection is not justified. Selection is made by a working group consisting of Kyrkerud’s assistant principal for art courses, the school’s cultural coordinator and two art educators.

If you are accepted, you need to accept or decline the place no later than May 5, after which an agreement will be signed.
