Malt AIR is a funded residency program in Ebeltoft, Denmark, designed to support international visual artists with time, space, and opportunities to develop their research and artistic practice. The program fosters networking with Danish artists, curators, and institutions through artist talks, workshops, and visits to key art hubs in Copenhagen, Aarhus, and Holstebro.

Program Structure:

  • 6 artists hosted per year across 3 residency periods.
  • Core activities: artist talks, presentations, student workshops, and a 1-week stay in Copenhagen.
  • Custom networking opportunities based on artists’ research interests.

    • 2025: Aug 29 – Nov 26
    • 2026: Jan 8 – Apr 7 | Apr 11 – Jul 9 | Aug 25 – Nov 23
    • 2027: Jan 7 – Apr 6 | Apr 9 – Jul 7

    Artists should rank their preferred periods in the application form.

 

Eligibility:

  • Who can apply? Professional visual artists living outside Denmark with:
    • Proven exhibition history (e.g., museums, biennials, public art commissions).
    • Prior collaborations with curators.
    • The ability to communicate in English for all activities.
  • Expectations:

    • Active participation in networking and local artistic exchanges.
    • Completion of an evaluation process during and after the residency.

  • PDF appendix (max 10 MB, single file):
    • Motivation letter with research/network plan (1 page).
    • CV (1 page) with at least 1 major exhibition + 2 referees.
    • Sample images (min 5 images, max 5 pages).

Selection Process:

  • Jury: Maltfabrikken, Art Hub Copenhagen, Jutland Art Academy + external juror.
  • Criteria:
    1. Research objectives: Clear residency goals and research focus.
    2. Networking plan: Specific Danish artists/professionals of interest.
    3. Professional experience: Strong exhibition and project history.
    4. References: Two referees to vouch for recent work and artistic development.
  • Finalists may be invited for video call interviews.
  • Results announced within 8 weeks of the deadline.
