The Millay Arts Playwriting Residency provides playwrights with time and space to develop their work in a supportive, multidisciplinary artistic community. By fostering creativity, the residency allows artists to focus on their craft, form meaningful connections, and engage with new perspectives.
Information & Application Details:
- Residencies last for one month.
- June & September: Half-sessions (12 days) are available.
- Applicants select up to three preferred residency periods.
- March 1 Deadline → Residencies scheduled for August–November.
- October 1 Deadline → Residencies scheduled for March–July.
Eligibility:
- Open to playwrights of all backgrounds.
- No geographic restrictions.
- Both emerging and established playwrights are encouraged to apply.
How to Apply:
- Sign in or register on the application portal.
- Upload required documents (artist statement, work samples, biographical statement).
- Add contact information (name, address, phone, email, gender, ethnicity).
- Indicate scheduling preferences for residency periods.
- Specify eligibility for named fellowships (optional).
- Enter payment information (application fee required).
- Submit application before the deadline.

Submission Requirements:

- Can include excerpts from plays, works-in-progress, or short plays.
- One additional page may be added for context.

- Written in third-person narrative (not a CV).
- Includes education, professional background, and key achievements.
- Mention how you learned about Millay Arts.

Scheduling Preferences
- Choose up to three preferred residency months.
- Indicate interest in a shorter residency (if applicable).
Selection Process:
- Applications are blind-reviewed to ensure selection is based on merit.
- A panel of professional playwrights, critics, academics, and alumni evaluates applications.
- Jury members change annually.
- If an applicant submits for both rounds in a year, the same panel will review both applications.

- Number of Awards: 2 per year.
- Eligibility: Open to artists from MD, PA, D.C., NJ, VA, VI.
- Priority given to: Baltimore-based and BIPOC applicants.
- Financial Support: Includes a travel stipend.

Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) Fellow
- Number of Awards: 1 per year.
- Eligibility: Open to Native American playwrights.
- Financial Support: No stipend currently available.

- Number of Awards: 1 per year.
- Eligibility: Playwrights whose work engages with archival research.
- Unique Opportunity: Access to the Nancy Graves Memorial Library for research and inspiration.
- Financial Support: No stipend currently available.

- Number of Awards: 2 per year.
- Eligibility: Playwrights who identify as trans/genderqueer*.
