Organizer Information:
The Invisible Dog and BUoY Arts Center are partnering to host the second edition of NAFAS (following a successful first edition in NYC). The festival builds a trans-local ecology grounded in trust, labor, and the simple but radical act of eating or living together.
Title & Description:
Applications are open for the NAFAS Festival (Tokyo Edition).
In Arabic, nafas means breath—but also the gift some possess to elevate food beyond sustenance into something extraordinary. This month-long festival is an invitation to think alongside the body and what moves through it. It explores what it means to grow, eat, nourish, gather, digest, and transform. The festival functions as both an exhibition and a gathering, extending beyond the gallery through community-oriented events, performances, cooking classes, film screenings, and conversations.
Category:
Multidisciplinary & Culinary Arts.
Eligibility & Focus:
- Who: Open to artists, performers, scholars, writers, poets, and chefs from Japan and internationally.
- Thematic Focus: Applicants must be willing to enter the territory of food. Proposals should trace the movements between soil and nourishment (e.g., the nourishing meal, the swallowed pill, the farmed insect, the fermented waste, the genetically modified seed, etc.).
Program Details:
Selected participants will present new or existing works during the month-long festival in Tokyo, sharing the same "table" with diverse artistic propositions and audiences.
