Brief Description

FREESAM’s international residency program offers artists a unique opportunity to work in the inspiring natural environment of Pico Island, Azores. The program aims to highlight the island’s cultural and environmental significance while fostering Czech-Portuguese artistic relations.

Eligibility

  • Open to artists who have completed their studies at least three years ago.
  • Applicants must have had at least two solo exhibitions or presentations.
  • Artists should be adaptable to basic living conditions.

Theme

Artists must create a unique work that:

  • Reflects Czech-Portuguese relations.
  • Showcases the importance of the Azores in an international context.
  • Supports environmental conservation.

Submission Requirements

Artists must be prepared to leave their final work with FREESAM for public presentation.

Selection Process

Chosen artists will be provided with a month-long residency on Pico Island, where they will create a new artwork inspired by the residency themes.

Program Benefits / Awards

  • Simple accommodation in a renovated historical mill.
  • Round-trip airfare to and from the Azores.
  • Monthly stipend:
    • EUR 1,000 per artist
    • EUR 1,500 for an artistic couple
  • Production budget: EUR 200
  • Basic tools & equipment available on-site.
  • One paid whale and dolphin-watching trip.
  • Guided hike to the Pico Volcano.
