The “Anomalous Mathematical Patterns” sci-art contest invites artists to explore the intersection of mathematics and art, focusing on concepts from the “Stochastic systems for anomalous diffusion” research program. The contest aims to showcase mathematical ideas through creative mediums and inspire collaborations between mathematicians and artists.

Information and Application Details:

  • Location: Isaac Newton Institute (INI), UK
  • Dates: December 4, 2024 – March 31, 2025 (00:01 GMT to 23:59 GMT)
  • Sponsors: Heilbronn Institute for Mathematical Research, Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences
  • Application Form: Submit here

Eligibility:

  • Open to artists 18 years or older.
  • Not open to individuals affiliated with specific universities or research groups (detailed exclusions provided).

Theme:
The contest explores mathematical themes such as irregularity, anomaly, diffusive processes, fluid dynamics, interacting particle systems, random networks, and kinetic art. Artwork should interpret the theme of “Anomalous Mathematical Patterns” and demonstrate the mathematical significance.

How to Apply:

  • Submit artwork via the online form.
  • Each artist may submit up to 3 entries across various categories.
  • Each submission should be accompanied by a 200-word explanation of its mathematical inspiration.

  • Entries must be created between May 31, 2024, and March 31, 2025.
  • Digital photos should be at least 1800 pixels (JPEG format).

Selection Process:

  • Judges will review the originality, aesthetic appeal, and mathematical interpretation.
  • 10 finalists will be selected per category.
  • Public and program participants will vote for additional awards (People’s Choice and Programme Participants’ Choice).
  • Cash prizes will be awarded for winners in each category.

Program Benefits/Awards:

  • Prizes:
