Tate Modern seeks a visionary Senior Curator to lead the development of its international modern and contemporary art Collection displays. The role involves curating exhibitions, developing research-led projects, shaping transnational narratives, and mentoring curatorial staff. The position combines Curatorial, Visual Arts, and Art Management responsibilities, providing a platform for creative leadership within one of the world's leading art institutions.

The Role Overview

  • Salary: £50,000–£55,000 per annum
  • Contract Type: Permanent, Full-time
  • Hours: 36 hours/week
  • Location: Tate Modern, Bankside, United Kingdom
  • Reporting To: Head of Curatorial, Tate Modern
  • Responsible For: Curators, Assistant Curators, temporary staff, contractors
  • Curator/Programme: Oversees Collection displays, exhibitions, public programs, and research initiatives
  • Fee/Compensation: Paid full-time salary

Position & Tasks

Working with the Collection

  • Lead the strategic development of Collection displays at Tate Modern
  • Ensure displays are imaginative, accessible, and reflect transnational narratives
  • Plan exhibitions for galleries, public spaces, and touring programs
  • Collaborate with Learning, Communities, and International Partnerships for audience engagement
  • Advise on acquisitions and collection management

Programme & Exhibitions

  • Lead and coordinate exhibition project teams
  • Negotiate loans and liaise with artists, collectors, and institutions
  • Manage project budgets and schedules
  • Write scholarly and accessible exhibition texts, catalogues, and wall labels
  • Represent projects to Tate Trustees, councils, and funding bodies

Management & Leadership

  • Lead the Curatorial team, mentoring junior staff
  • Foster inter-disciplinary and trans-historical curatorial practice
  • Maintain networks with artists, estates, galleries, collectors, and academia
  • Deputize for senior management when required

General Responsibilities

  • Contribute to Tate’s research strategy and publishing projects
  • Participate in recruitment and advocacy for Tate
  • Uphold diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of work
