Organizer Information

Arteles Creative Center is an internationally recognized residency and creative retreat space based in rural Finland, dedicated to supporting transdisciplinary artistic and research-driven practices. The center operates as a platform for artists, writers, performers, researchers, and thinkers working across visual arts, literature, sound, science, philosophy, psychology, and other hybrid fields of inquiry.

Arteles is known for its emphasis on process-based creation rather than production-driven outcomes. Its programs are structured around deep focus, contemplative practice, and cross-disciplinary exchange. The organization situates itself within a broader cultural movement that values slowness, silence, and reflective modes of knowledge production. By hosting residencies in a remote natural environment, Arteles actively supports participants in distancing themselves from urban, digital, and institutional pressures, enabling more experimental and inward-facing creative work.

Over the years, Arteles has developed a reputation for curating thematic residencies that explore existential, philosophical, and sensory dimensions of contemporary practice. Its programs often attract an international cohort of participants with backgrounds in both artistic and academic disciplines.

Title & Description

Silence Awareness Existence – Thematic Residency Program (Winter 2027, Finland)

Silence Awareness Existence is a 29-day thematic residency designed for artists, writers, researchers, and multidisciplinary creatives interested in exploring consciousness, perception, and existential inquiry through their practice. The program takes place during the Finnish winter, a season characterized by extreme stillness, limited daylight, and immersive natural conditions that reinforce introspective and contemplative work.

The residency is structured as a retreat into focused creative and cognitive space. It brings together participants from diverse fields including visual arts, photography, literature, performing arts, music and sound, science, philosophy, psychology, and mindfulness-related disciplines. The program explicitly encourages both artistic and research-oriented approaches, placing equal value on intuitive, experimental, and academic methodologies.

Participants are not required to produce a finalized outcome or exhibition-ready work. Instead, the residency prioritizes process, exploration, and inner development. The environment is designed to support both solitary concentration and voluntary group exchange, allowing participants to define their own balance between isolation and interaction.

Key structural elements include silent days (two per week), limited internet access, and optional guided meditation sessions. These elements are integrated to reduce cognitive overload and support sustained attention, reflective thinking, and embodied awareness practices. The residency is framed as both a creative and existential space, where making, thinking, and being are treated as interconnected processes.
