Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar is a vibrant museum for art and cultural history, known for its strong regional roots and a collection of both national and international importance. The museum welcomes around 60,000 visitors each year, offering a program built around three main pillars:
Old Masters (16th–17th century)
The Bergen School (early 20th-century art)
Contemporary and cultural-historical exhibitions

Position Summary
As the Head of Program and Collection, you will:
Shape the strategic direction for exhibitions, the collection, and public programming (including education and community participation).
Lead and inspire an 8-member team comprising curators, educators, and collection managers to deliver meaningful and high-quality content.
Design long-term policies for acquisitions, conservation efforts, and audience development.
Act as a key connector across departments as part of the Management Team (MT), ensuring programs reflect the museum’s mission and strategic ambitions.
Represent the museum in regional and international contexts, building relationships with donors, cultural organizations, and governmental bodies.
Key Responsibilities
Content & Strategy
- Shape a cohesive exhibition program with the Director and Head of Public Engagement.
- Oversee collection development, including preservation, research, and acquisitions.
- Translate mission into accessible public programs for diverse audiences.
Team Leadership
- Foster collaboration across curatorial, education, and collection teams.
- Mentor staff and optimize workflows.
Operational Excellence
- Ensure efficient processes for exhibitions, loans, and projects.
- Monitor budgets and reporting.

Eligibility:
Essential Qualifications
- Proven museum leadership (min. 5 years) in curatorial, education, or collections.
- Strategic thinker with ability to align vision with operational execution.
- Strong communicator (Dutch fluency preferred; English required).
- Project management skills (exhibitions, public programs).
- Passion for art history (Old Masters, modern, or contemporary).
Preferred Traits
- Experience in audience development and participatory practices.
- Knowledge of Dutch/European art networks.

Program Benefits or Awards:
Position Type: 28–32 hours/week (0.8–0.9 FTE)
Contract: 1-year initial term, with potential for permanent extension
Salary Range: €4,532–€7,093/month (based on 36 hours) + 8% holiday allowance + 3.4% year-end bonus
