The Bader + Simon Empowerment Grant is designed to support emerging, underrepresented artists in the U.S. The grant aims to provide financial assistance and visibility to artists whose work elicits dialogue, inquiry, and understanding, addressing themes of social justice, education, and community. The grant will contribute to an exhibition at the Bader + Simon gallery, set to open in 2025 in Cincinnati’s Over-The-Rhine neighborhood.

Eligibility:

  • Open to emerging U.S. artists.
  • Applicants must not hold an MA or MFA degree or have extensive exhibition experience.
  • Artists must demonstrate an intention to create work that aligns with the gallery’s mission of social justice and education through art.

 

Theme:

(Social justice, education, and community empowerment)

The grant focuses on underrepresented voices and themes that provoke conversation and broadening understanding. Community programming will accompany the exhibition to enhance the theme.

 

How to Apply:

Complete the application form, which includes:

  • Short bio or resume with contact details.
  • Artist statement (250-500 words or a 3-5 minute video).
  • Statement of Intent explaining the project, development process, and how the grant will support the artist’s goals.
  • 5 work samples (images or a 2-4 minute video).
  • References: 3 contacts, including one written or video recommendation.
  • Budget and timeline for using the funds.
  • How you learned about the grant.

 

Submission Requirements:

  • All application materials (bio, statement, work samples, references, etc.) must be submitted online by the deadline.
  • A Zoom session will be held on February 13, 2025, at 8 pm EST for guidance and Q&A.

 

Selection Process:

  • Applications will be reviewed by the Bader + Simon Board of Directors.
  • The grant will be awarded based on alignment with the gallery’s mission and the artist’s proposed work.

 

Program Benefits:

  • Total grant amount: $7,500, paid in three installments:
  • $2,500 upfront.
  • $2,500 upon completion of the work to be displayed at the gallery.
  • $2,500 paid monthly from May to December.
  • Travel and accommodation will be provided for the artist’s attendance at the exhibition opening and artist talk.
  • The artist will also serve as a panelist for the following year’s grant review.
