Organizer Information:

The Clay Studio is designed to assist artists early in their careers to develop the skills needed to make a living as artists. The program intentionally reflects a diverse range of aesthetic approaches and cultures, helping residents become successful members of the Philadelphia art community while making national and international connections.

Title & Description:

Applications are open for the Resident Artist Program.

This long-term residency offers top emerging ceramic talent the space, time, and resources to develop their artwork and professional lives for up to three years. Residents will work within a community of like-minded individuals in an urban environment. They will also engage with the community by teaching classes, offering mentorship, and organizing group critiques. The 2026 guest juror is distinguished ceramicist Chris Staley.

Eligibility:

  • Who: Early-career ceramic artists (U.S. and international).
  • Location Requirement: Residents must live within the greater Philadelphia area during the residency.
  • International Applicants: Very welcome to apply. The Clay Studio can serve as a sponsor organization and provide a letter of invitation, but they are NOT responsible for visa application activities.

Program Benefits & Awards:

  • Financial Support: A $250/month stipend (funded by the Windgate Foundation), and the normal $200/month program fee/rent is completely waived for up to three years.
  • Workspace: Personal studio space (approx. 185-195 sq. ft.) within the building, plus a fully stocked glaze mixing area and use of kilns.
  • Exhibitions: A solo exhibition after 24 months in residence, plus group exhibition opportunities.
  • Professional Support: Paid teaching opportunities, grant writing support, and professional guidance from the curator and staff.

Resident Responsibilities & Costs:

  • Costs: Residents must cover the cost of their own materials and firing fees.
  • Housing: Not provided. Residents are responsible for finding their own housing in the Philadelphia area.
  • Obligations: Active use of the studio as a primary activity, mandatory monthly meetings, teaching in the Community Studio (4 Saturdays per year), volunteering for community events, and agreeing to the Code of Conduct.

Application Requirements:

Submit a SINGLE PDF via email containing the following:

  1. Personal contact information.
  2. Resume / CV.
  3. Artist Statement.
  4. Personal Statement (250-500 words) explaining why you are applying, how it will benefit you, and what you will contribute to the community.
  5. 10 digital images (each marked with title, medium, size, date, and a brief description/statement for each).
  6. 3 references (contact information only; no letters needed).
