The prize seeks artistic projects that highlight the symbolic, sacred, and ecological significance of freshwater, fostering awareness and action towards its conservation. Launched in 2010, the COAL Prize identifies, promotes, and supports artists whose work contributes to environmental transformation and sustainability.

  • Open to artists worldwide
  • Suitable for in-progress artistic projects
  • Open to individual artists or collectives
  • COAL Student Prize is also available for students from art and cultural institutions

  • Addressing issues like pollution, scarcity, and access inequalities
  • The role of art in fostering ecological awareness and water conservation
  • Exploring water through symbolism, history, science, and sustainability

 

How to Apply:

  • Prepare a single PDF (max 30MB) named NAME_Firstname_2025_Project-Title
  • Download and complete the application form

Submission Requirements:

  • Detailed project description (artistic concept, connection to freshwater theme, feasibility, and budget estimate)
  • At least two visual representations of the project
  • CV and portfolio

 

Selection Process:

  • Ten artists will be nominated by a selection committee of art and ecology professionals
  • Final awards are decided by a jury of experts and partners
  • Non-winning submissions may still be considered for future opportunities within COAL and its network

  • COAL Prize Winner: €12,000 + creative residency at Domaine de Belval (François Sommer Foundation)
  • Special Jury Prize: €3,000
  • Ateliers Médicis Award: Residency in Clichy-sous-Bois and Montfermeil (Bondy regional forest)
