The Edward F. Albee Foundation offers month-long residencies for writers and visual artists at "The Barn," a peaceful retreat in Montauk, New York. This program provides private bedrooms and separate work studios for up to four residents at a time, fostering uninterrupted creative work.   Information & Application Details:

Eligibility:

  • Open to writers and visual artists of all media, internationally
  • Selection based on talent and need
  • ADA-accessible facility
 

Participant Responsibilities:

  • Cover food, travel, and personal expenses
  • Help maintain the residence and its peaceful environment

Submission Requirements:

  • Writers:

    • Playwriting/Screenwriting: Full script (max 130 pages)
    • Poetry: Up to 12 poems (max 20 pages)
    • Fiction: 1 short story or 2 novel chapters (max 40 pages)
    • Non-fiction/Memoir/Journalism: 2 essays/articles or book chapters (max 40 pages)
    • Works in foreign languages must include English translations

  • Visual Artists:

    • 6–12 images (painting, sculpture, photography)
    • Up to 3 media files (video, digital art, etc.)

  • Additional Materials:

    • Artist statement detailing residency goals
    • CV or résumé
    • 2 reference letters (submitted directly by recommenders)
  Selection Process:
Applications are reviewed for artistic merit and need. Residents are chosen based on their work quality and potential for growth through the residency.
