The SBC Contemporary Art Gallery artist-in-residence program offers artists a five-week period for research and experimentation at the intersection of art, politics, and society. It provides access to production spaces, technical support, and a gallery for work and presentations.

Eligibility:

  • Open to emerging, mid-career, and established artists.
  • Encourages applications from racialized, Indigenous, disabled, and gender-diverse artists.

 

Theme:

Projects must align with creative risk-taking and explore art’s intersection with politics and society. Artists must justify their need for the residency’s facilities.

Submission Requirements:

Applicants must submit a single PDF document via email (WeTransfer, max. 200MB) to info@sbcgallery.ca by February 15, 2025. The document should include:

  1. Cover letter (max. 500 words)
  2. Artistic approach statement (max. 500 words)
  3. Project description & technical/material needs (max. 600 words)
  4. Five-week residency schedule
  5. CV (max. 3 pages)
  6. Self-identification (optional)
  7. Visual portfolio (5-10 images or video/audio links with descriptions)

 

Selection Process:

  • Phase 1: Pre-selection of five applications by a jury from partner institutions.
  • Phase 2: Final selection by two art professionals and an SBC representative.
