Short Description

transmediale presents the second edition of the residency programme in collaboration with the Arts Council Korea. The residency will be awarded to one person of Korean nationality, based in Korea or elsewhere, working in the fields of digital art and moving image practices, design, sound, and media theory. Applications are open for artists, researchers, practitioners, designers, and sound artists. The call is open to all formats with a focus on projects that engage with the thematic framework of the open call and combine a strong artistic vision with a research- and/or practice-based approach.

Thematic Framework

As history keeps looping back on itself, echoing patterns both familiar and unresolved, our routines, systems, and protocols follow these repetitions. Yet within these recurring paths lie chances to hesitate, to step sideways, and to gently reconfigure our orbit. In a time when an overall sense of looming doom permeates our daily lives, it is precisely these small gestures that ground the way for moving forward.

Over a decade ago, artist Shu Lea Cheang described our moment in time as “post-everything”, a state that calls for moving beyond established paradigms, inviting alternative forms of knowledge, community, and technological imagination. Which shared practices and forms of techno-mediated gestures can support our collective resilience? What are the subtle – yet, in the long run, powerful – processes and hacks that interfere with the exploitative nature of history and its entrenched systems?

Amid escalating political and ecological urgencies and deepening societal divides, this year’s open call for residents invites proposals that explore the relational modes of digital art practices, along with research into the multivalent notions of technology – as a tool, medium, infrastructure, or practice. Particular focus is placed on approaches that critically engage with the social dimensions and (mis)uses of technology and consider what they offer in response to the present moment and the near futures ahead.
