The postdoctoral researcher will join the Chair “Imaginaires émancipés” at the University of Lille’s Contemporary Arts Research Center (CEAC). This interdisciplinary project examines decolonial visual practices and critical counter-narratives in art history from the 20th century to the present, with a focus on postcolonial contexts and transnational circulations.

Key Responsibilities

Chair “Imaginaires émancipés” (40%)

  • Conduct literature reviews and archival research on decolonial aesthetics.
  • Assist in curating an exhibition and organizing seminars/publications.
  • Contribute to preparatory work for the 2027 conference.

Personal Research (60%)

1 publication by contract end.

Develop a project aligned with the Chair’s themes (postcolonial visual studies, critical art histories, or practice-based research).

Deliverables:

State-of-the-art report on Chair themes.

Submission Requirements:

Required skills

The person recruited must be able to:

– Find the relevant sources and make a detailed state of the art;

– Engage in a cross-research approach, at the crossroads of the history and theory of art, aesthetics and politics;

Recommended personal qualities:

– Experience and/or interest in curatorial work;

– Skills in critical visual studies (photography, media, cinema, etc.), an ability to combine practice and theorization of art;

– Ability to work within a multidisciplinary team, to co-organize events, publications and seminars

Languages: fluent in French and English, additional language appreciated

Contract from June 1, 2025 to May 31, 2026, renewable for one year

Prerequisites – administrative conditions:

Hold a doctorate awarded after 01/06/2022 or have defended their thesis by the application submission date

2. Summary of the thesis and defense report (or pre-reports, if applicable)

3. Research project of 3 pages maximum (methodology and theoretical approach envisaged, feasibility with provisional work schedule, planned fieldwork/archives) as well as possible proposals for the Chair’s animation.

Successful candidates will be interviewed on May 15, 2025, with a starting date of early June. Since travel expenses for the auditions are not covered, these auditions may be held via videoconference.


Mission and documentation expenses will be covered. The recruited person will be equipped with a laptop.

The recruited person will report to the CEAC and will be assigned a position at the University of Lille, on the Pont de Bois campus. On-site presence of at least one day per week is required.
