Short Description:
Canal Projects is a nonprofit contemporary art space in downtown Manhattan committed to supporting and showcasing emerging and underrepresented artists from around the globe. With a dynamic curatorial program, residencies, and public events, Canal Projects seeks to be a vital platform for bold experimentation and long-term artist development — a springboard for artists to connect with prominent institutions and collections through authentic and resonant practices.
The Artistic Director will guide the curatorial, strategic, and operational direction of Canal Projects. This leadership position merges creative curatorial vision with robust administrative, financial, and communication skills. The Artistic Director will oversee programming, institutional growth, day-to-day operations, and external engagement in close partnership with the Board of Directors.
This role is not for someone primarily interested in institutional prestige or the commercial market — instead, we’re looking for a visionary with extensive knowledge of international contemporary art and the practical skills to help grow a forward-thinking, artist-first nonprofit. The ideal candidate is proactive, detail-focused, and capable of managing gallery operations, budgets, team dynamics, and public relations.
