Overview

Founded by former Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) Chicago curator Tricia Van Eck and Andre Fiebig, 6018North is an artist-centered commons, social experiment, and non-profit venue housed in a preserved 1909 German Neoclassical/Prairie-style historic home at 6018 N. Kenmore Avenue in the Edgewater neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. Operating both out of its intentionally dilapidated mansion base and itinerantly across non-traditional city sites (vacant storefronts, public parks, alleys, beaches, and classrooms), 6018North acts as a creative incubator for cross-disciplinary experimentation, public art, and audience-engaged social practice.

Mission

6018North aims to challenge traditional notions of what art is, whom it is for, and where and how it is created. Grounded in utopian ideals of art and social justice, the organization seeks to use artistic encounters and communal gatherings—often centered around shared food, architecture, play, and dialogue—to build bridges across economic, racial, generational, and cultural divides. By promoting risk-taking, sustainability, and cross-disciplinary collaboration, 6018North strives to invigorate the local Edgewater community while fostering a broader international cultural exchange.

Programs / Opportunities

  • Site-Specific Exhibitions & Installations: Experimental, audience-engaged visual, architectural, and sound art exhibitions mounted inside the historic house, off-site urban spaces, and during major city-wide platforms like the Chicago Architecture Biennial.
  • Conversational Events & Communal Dinners: Free public discussions, neighborhood activations, and gathering events (such as the acclaimed Black Out Dinners and Justice Hotel) where food and hospitality serve as catalysts for dialogue between artists, patrons, and local residents.
  • Itinerant & Public Space Interventions: Outdoor performances, street art activations, environmental initiatives, and beach or alleyway installations designed to bring creative encounters directly into public everyday spaces.
  • Cross-Disciplinary Incubators & Residencies: Collaborative, non-competitive projects and mentoring opportunities that connect multi-disciplinary artists with organizers, thought leaders, environmentalists, and entrepreneurs.

Target Community

  • Multidisciplinary Artists & Curators: Local, national, and international visual artists, performers, architects, social practice practitioners, writers, and guest curators across all career stages.
  • Local & Diverse Audience Base: Residents of Chicago’s Edgewater neighborhood (including Section 8 housing communities, international refugees, LGBTQIA+ individuals, single-family home residents, and students), as well as the broader Chicago and international contemporary art publics.
