Overview
Initiated in 2018 by visual artist Stefie Steden and AG Minimales Reisen (under the non-governmental organization kulturgymnastik e.V.), KHB Studios Berlin operates as an urban extension of KHB Kunsthalle Below (founded in 2015). Located at Leopoldplatz in the Wedding district of Berlin, Germany, the storefront studio space features two small, attractive rooms equipped with desks and armchairs. Characterized by historic pink-plaster walls and floor-to-ceiling chalkboard surfaces, the space offers international creators a simple, focused workspace in an urban context, combining private accommodations (private/shared rooms or shared apartments) with collaborative facilities.
Objectives
Operating as an anti-elitist artists’ initiative, AG Minimales Reisen understands travel as a central cultural technique of our time, utilizing climate-neutral exploration in the “near distance” to initiate process- and research-oriented formats. KHB Studios Berlin aims to provide a conceptual resonance space for artistic work, relaxation, and visibility. The initiative seeks to bring diverse artistic positions together, foster long-term international collaborations (utilizing digital research frameworks like Parallel Protocols and Room Trips), and engage the surrounding Berlin-Wedding community through storefront hospitality and open events.
Programs / Opportunities
- Minimales Reisen Residencies: Short- to medium-term urban residencies (lasting 2 weeks, 3 weeks, or 1 month) for 1 to 3 artists at a time, providing private or shared workspaces, kitchen facilities, and accommodation options.
- Collective Events & Exhibition Space: Open events, public presentations, storefront showcases, and experimental gatherings designed for minimal travel experimentation and artistic insights.
- Research & Networking Resources: Access to research libraries, networking opportunities, and publishing frameworks through AG Minimales Reisen’s Parallel Protocols platform.
Target Community
- Multidisciplinary Artists & Practitioners: International and local creators, visual artists, performing artists, writers, photographers, curators, and researchers (working in English, German, or Dutch).
