Description & Background
Founded in 2022, RUBEZH is an international diaspora, mutual-aid ecosystem, and community platform for émigré artists born across more than 25 countries and living across 5 continents. Created as a cultural sanctuary for artists in exile and at risk, the project operates both online and offline through free ateliers, communes, shelters, and international exhibition spaces. RUBEZH offers a shared home beyond national borders, where belonging is defined not by birthplace or inherited identity, but by shared human values and artistic practice.
Objectives
The project aims to help émigré artists continue their practices under conditions of displacement, building an international community grounded in liberty, human rights, equality, freedom of cultural expression, solidarity, and peaceful dialogue. Driven by the principle of freedom from oppression, totalitariansim, and prejudice, RUBEZH seeks to provide protection, safety, and democratization for creators in exile. Ultimately, the organization works to integrate displaced artists into local and international art scenes, facilitate cross-cultural exchange, and provide emergency shelter and mutual aid to support artists through life transitions.
Programs / Opportunities
- Protection & Shelter Initiatives: Operating democratic communes, shelters, and a free daily-access atelier to provide safe housing and physical studio space for artists at risk.
