Village Unhu is an artist-led project space officially registered with the laws of Zimbabwe since 2009. The space is run by artists Misheck Masamvu and Georgina Maxim and its activities commenced in 2009 firstly as but only a studio space. The collective project is critically engaged and curatorial focused on offering strong frameworks for artists and audiences. Today Village Unhu boasts of having two locations; Harare, 1 Rowland Square, Milton Park and Mutare at the old Drifters Backpackers Lodge, Mount Wolseley, Mutare.
Artists have been drawn to artist-led spaces because they offer a platform for experimentation, the opportunity to sharpen critical and professional skills and support for all forms of art practice and artists of all ages and stages. We are about saving a way of life and about saving lives. Since the first participation of Zimbabwe at the Venice Biennale of 2010 and onwards, we have seen a significant shift in the vitality and sustainability of Zimbabwean contemporary visual arts. There is much to be celebrated by Village Unhu from the rise in attendees at galleries and arts events, to increased private sector support and growing international collaboration and recognition. We are responding to a dynamic arts environment through paintings, drawings and graphics, multi-media 3D found objects, photographs and stone sculptures.
