Description & Background
Located in Suginami City, Tokyo, ZA-KOENJI Public Theatre is a public cultural hub and “town square” dedicated to the creation, dissemination, and preservation of the performing arts. Designed by architect Toyo Ito and operated by syuz’gen LLC (a professional art management organization acting as designated manager), the theater operates under the artistic direction of playwright, director, and actor Keita Shirai. The venue functions as a community-based cultural center featuring versatile black-box and community halls, rehearsal rooms, technical creation studios, an archive for contemporary play manuscripts, and the platform ZA-Party—an initiative facilitating international cooperation and artistic solidarity across Asia.
Objectives
ZA-KOENJI aims to cultivate imagination through theater and serve as an accessible space where community members encounter new ideas, rediscover themselves, and engage with global perspectives. Governed by core values of unprecedented creation, open communication, everyday accessibility, and safe dialogue, the organization strives to strike a balance between artistic merit and public approachability. Through partnership agreements with regional cultural organizations, ZA-KOENJI seeks to nurture emerging talent, promote multilingual accessibility, and build pathways for international dialogue that transcend national, cultural, and disciplinary boundaries.
Programs / Opportunities
- Performing Arts Camp in Koenji (PACK) / ZA-Party: An international residency, research, and production program for young Asian-based performing arts practitioners, featuring mentorship, fieldwork, lectures, and culminating in a public collaborative performance (“party”).
- Learning & Human Resource Development: Running the Theater Creation Academy, hosting professional workshops, dramaturgical labs, and structured talent development initiatives for creators and community members.
- Independent Productions & Restagings: Planning, producing, and hosting theatrical, dance, and interdisciplinary performances across its flexible venues (ZA-KOENJI 1, ZA-KOENJI 2, and Awaodori Hall).
- Contemporary Script Archive & Research: Collecting, preserving, and providing public access to contemporary play manuscripts in partnership with the Japan Playwrights Association.
- Community & Cultural Outreach: Hosting seasonal local festivals, street performance showcases, children’s reading workshops, and events promoting local culture like the Tokyo Koenji Awa Odori festival.
Target Community
- Performing Artists & Creators: Young, emerging, and established actors, playwrights, directors, dramaturgs, scenographers, dancers, and interdisciplinary practitioners based in Japan and across Asia.
