The Book Art Research Fellowship is designed for researchers and scholars in fields like art history, literature, book history, library science, museum studies, and conservation studies. The fellowship offers access to the Center for Book Arts (CBA)‘s unique collections and institutional support for scholarly research related to book art. Fellows will receive a $1,200 stipend for a research residency at CBA. The research culminates in a public talk, with the opportunity for publication in the Book Art Review journal.

  • Application Deadline: February 28, 2025
  • Research Period: Fellows are expected to spend 2-3 weeks conducting research at the CBA, anytime in 2025, excluding holidays.
  • Fellowship Stipend: $1,200
  • Research Focus: This fellowship is intended for scholarly research projects, not the creation of artwork.
  • Location: The fellowship requires on-site research at the Center for Book Arts in New York.

 

Eligibility:

  • Fields of Study: Open to researchers and scholars in art history, literature, book history, library science, museum studies, conservation studies, or other related fields.
  • Research Focus: Research projects must be related to the CBA’s collections of book art, including artists’ books, prints, and archival materials.
  • Note: The fellowship is focused on research rather than artistic creation.

 

Theme:

  • The research must draw upon the CBA’s collections, which include:
    1. Fine Arts Collection: Artists’ books, prints, and objects.
    2. Reference Library: Materials on the practice, theory, and history of book arts.
    3. Archives: Records of past exhibitions and CBA’s programmatic history.
  • Research Goal: Scholars will investigate book art as a creative medium, its history, and theoretical frameworks.

 

How to Apply:

  • Application Deadline: February 28, 2025
  • Required Documents:
    1. Resume or CV
    2. Proposal (500-1000 words) including:
      • A description of the research project.
      • How CBA’s collections are relevant to the project.
      • A short bibliography (at least 5 works from CBA’s collection).
      • Proposed timeline for the research residency.
    3. Timeline for Residency: Research will be conducted between April and December 2025, excluding holidays.
  • Note: The fellowship is strictly for scholarly research, not for creating artwork.

Selection Process:

  • Notification Date: March/April 2025.
  • The selection process will evaluate the relevance and quality of the proposed research project, as well as the applicant’s background and qualifications.
