Millay Arts offers a residency program designed to support multidisciplinary artists, including fiction writers, by providing time and space for creative work. The residency fosters artistic growth, encourages community connections, and supports the creation of new works that may not otherwise be possible. Writers are invited to immerse themselves in their craft and benefit from the quiet and productive environment of the residency.

 

Information & Application Details:

  • Program Type: Residency for fiction writers.
  • Application Process: Submit application through Submittable.
  • Deadlines:
    • March 1 (for residencies in August-November)
    • October 1 (for residencies in March-July)
  • Application portal opens: Mid-November for March deadline, Mid-April for October deadline.
  • Application Fee: $45

 

Eligibility:

  • Open to all fiction writers.
  • Named Fellowships: Specific fellowships are available for applicants who meet certain criteria, such as:
    • Charm City Fellow (for applicants from MD, PA, D.C., NJ, VA & VI, preference for Baltimore/BIPOC applicants).
    • Institute of American Indian Arts Fellow (for Native American writers).
    • Nancy Graves Fellow (for writers whose work is archive-based).
    • Vincent Prize Fellow (for trans*/genderqueer writers).

 

Theme:

  • The residency is open to fiction writers working in all genres and forms.
  • Special fellowships may be more specific in focus, like archive-based or Native American-themed works.

 

How to Apply:

  1. Sign In/Register on Submittable platform.
  2. Upload the following:
    • Artist Statement (1-page maximum, blind submission, no personal details).
    • Work Samples (up to 20 pages, double-spaced, manuscript format).
    • Biographical Statement (1-page maximum, narrative form).
    • Scheduling Preferences (choose up to three months).
    • Named Fellowship (optional).
  3. Add Contact Information and required details (name, address, phone, email, etc.).
  4. Enter Payment Information.
  5. Click “Submit” when all documents are uploaded.

 

Submission Requirements:

  • Artist Statement (1-page, focusing on your work and goals for the residency).
  • Work Samples (up to 20 pages, double-spaced).
  • Biographical Statement (1-page, in third-person).
  • Scheduling Preferences (up to three months, with specific sessions available).
  • Payment Information for the application fee.

 

Selection Process:

  • The jury process is blind, meaning submissions are reviewed without identifying personal details.
  • Jurors are invited from a range of backgrounds: critics, academics, artists, and Millay Arts alumni.
  • Applications are assessed on merit by the jury.

  • Residency Periods: 3-1/2 week sessions, with shorter 12-day sessions in June & September.
  • Fellowships: Various named fellowships with specific criteria (e.g., travel stipends for Charm City Fellows).
